The Continental Picture
Africa's Assessment Journey: Where We Stand
Of the 52 AfCFTA member states, 5 have begun at least one assessment — a 10% coverage rate. Across all three tools, 27 individual assessments have been initiated, though most remain in early stages. This reflects the reality of a massive continental undertaking: before countries can trade effectively under the AfCFTA, they need to understand what they should trade (Future Impact), whether their systems can support trade (Tool B), and whether they can actually produce at scale (Tool C).
47 countries have not yet started any assessment. The question is not whether they will participate in the AfCFTA — they already signed the agreement. The question is whether they will participate with data or without it. Countries that complete all three assessments will negotiate from evidence; those that don't will negotiate blind.
